Merseyside Achieve a Record Low in Fire-Related Deaths

There has been a major decrease in fire-related deaths across the County after an announcement by the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS).

10 years ago, there were 16 fire-related deaths in the entire year. This has now dropped to only one death in the whole of 2023.

In the past 25 years MFRS have took major precautions to improve fire safety in and around Merseyside after noticing data that showed there were certain communities of people at higher risk of being affected by fires.

Head of Prevention and Area Manager at MFRS, Mark Thomas, said the reduction is due to more awareness being raised.

He added : “Our firefighters are dealing with prevention on a daily basis. They’re having conversations with people in their own homes. The message is really landing with people.”

The Fire Service visits around 60,000 homes per year to emphasise the message of what people can lose by using different strategies like showing pictures of homes that have been devastated by fire.

To maintain these low figures, the team aspire to keep emphasising the importance of taking all necessary measures to prevent fires from happening.
