Black in the ivory

An exhibition is due to go ahead on the 22nd April, it’s being funded by Liverpool John Moore’s diversity and inclusion scheme aims to overturn the views of black women studying in academics.

Founder, Dominique Walker hopes to create a safe place for black, female staff and students to share their views and voices.

The exhibition will take place in the John Lennon Art and Design building from 5:30pm till 7:30pm. It will consist of letters, poems and art to explore the treatment of black women in academia.

Dominique Walker said: “Black in the Ivory was basically me sitting down with community members, students and staff. Figuring the things that black women needed…

Then I thought to use creative methods to explain those experiences as that’s  the way I understand them and the way a lot of women understand them as well.”

“We need to acknowledge that black women are in the university. We need to support and develop black women in universities.”

They felt black women needed an outlet in university settings to allow them to do so.

The group plans to continue working together next year and even has plans to involve other minorities in their workshops.
