Remembering the 35th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Tragedy

It has been 35 years since 97 lives were lost at the Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989.

At 3:06pm – the time when the fatal match was brought to a stop – there will be a minute’s silence at the Exchange Flags.

There will be 97 bell tolls, for each valuable life that was taken that day alongside flags flown at half-mast from the Liverpool Town Hall.

All members of the public are welcome to visit and pay their respects or commemorate any loved ones that were lost.

If you’re not able to be there physically, you can watch a livestream of it on Liverpool City Council’s Facebook, from around 3pm.

Ian Byrne, Labour MP for Liverpool West Derby, posted on Twitter/X : “35 years ago we attended a football match with hope in our hearts. 97 innocent women, men and children were unlawfully killed, never to return to their families and countless lives were changed forever. My love and thoughts go to the families, survivors and everybody affected.”

Other tributes have been announced including from Keir Starmer, Labour Part leader, who announced a new law today – Hillsborough Law.

Which the families of the lives lost have been campaigning for years to bring in, Starmer said he is making it his priority in the Labour government to bring them this justice.

The law requires that of public authorities and organisations to tell the truth regarding public safety which they are responsible for.
