Lawyer Elkan Abrahamson, who represented many of the Hillsborough families was awarded the Freedom Of Liverpool on the 12th of April.

Abrahamson first got involved with the Hillsborough families after being approached by mother Anne Williams who lost her 15 year old son at the disaster in 1989 and ended up representing more than 20 of the families who’s loved ones were victims in the disaster in the Hillsborough inquests.

The city recognised his hard work and compassion for the Hillsborough families, with a ceremony that took place at Liverpool town hall.

Ambrahamson said: ‘I guess it’s a recognition of the work I’ve done, but it’s also for me a recognition of the struggles that the bereaved families have been through themselves.’ He added ‘We’re coming up to the 35th anniversary and the fact that the families kept the struggle going and are still campaigning for Hillsborough law gives me the strength to carry on as well.’

Abrahamson has also notably worked in other campaigns such as those wrongly arrested in the 1981 Toxeth riots and families impacted in the Manchester area bombing.
