35th Hillsborough Anniversary

Crowds gathered at the Liverpool Town Hall to commemorate the tragedy.

It marked 35 years since the 1989 Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest semi-final FA cup match.

On the 15th of April two ceremony where held by Liverpool city council to remember the 97 victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

The first took place at Anfield stadium at 12pm where flowers where presented by the Ceremonial Lord Mayor Mary Rasmussen and Leader of the Liverpool city council Liam Robinson.

Both payed their respects to the victims of the tragedy at the shrine where names rest outside of the ground.

The second ceremony was held at the Liverpool city town hall.

A crowd had gathered in the town hall square were at 3:06pm a minutes silence was held in memory for those who had lost their lives.

This was the exact time that the game had to be stopped due to the chaos happening during the crush.

Both the Mayor and Cllr Robinson attended this ceremony also with Rasmussen addressing the crowd in morning.

The bells of the town hall began to toll 97 times in memory of the victims.

Although 94 Liverpool supporters died at the match, one person died in hospital within the week and another died in 1993. The 97th victim Andrew Devin died in July 2021 and had suffered brain damage during the event and had never fully recovered. He is now remembered as the 97th.

now the battle continues to see Hillsborough law implemented into Government legislation so that disasters like this never happen again.

Liam Robinson spoke about how he feels the law would bring justice to all the families and victims of the cover up that proceeded the even.

The would that would enforce a duty of candour on state authorities and officers and private entities whose activities impact on public safety.

This would mean that cover ups like the Hillsborough disaster would never be possible without serious consequences to those in power.

Both the Liverpool city council and Liverpool MP’s Such as Ian Byrne are working towards this laws implementation.
